Pumpkin Headphone Covers — Fall Aesthetic With Little Ghost Charm

Why headphone covers

I live in my headphones — editing patterns, watching tutorials, walking the dog. Last October I saw a girl on the train with pumpkin earmuffs and thought "I can crochet that." First try was too small and popped off. Second was too big and flopped.

Third time I figured it out: make a flat circle that is 0.5" smaller than your ear cup, then 4 rounds straight with no increase — that creates a lip that hugs the cup. No elastic, no glue, it just stays because of the lip. I pull it off when I need to charge and pop it back on.

The ghost is optional but it's the favorite part — little white ghost with wavy bottom hanging from a white chain, bounces when you nod to music.

What you need — my fall basket

• Yarn: Chunky / bulky — Orange 80g (my color: orange like your photo), Green 15g for stem + leaves, White 10g for ghost chain + ghost
• Hook: 4.5mm for covers (so they stretch), 3.5mm for stem/leaves/ghost (tighter)
• Headphones: Any over-ear — measure ear cup diameter — mine are 3.5"
• Extras: Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch markers, small amount polyfill for pumpkin puff (optional)

How sizing works — measure your headphones

Measure across your ear cup — outside edge to outside edge. Make your circle until it is 0.5" SMALLER than that measurement — it will stretch over. For my 3.5" cups, I stop at 36 stitches = 3" circle. Then straight rounds make the sides.

Step 1: Pumpkin covers — make 2, same

This is the main piece. R1-R6 is flat circle, R7-R10 is sides. Try it on your headphone after R8 — it should hug and not pop off. If loose, do 3 straight rounds not 4. If tight, do 5.

Step 2: Green stem + leaves — like your photo

Stem is a tiny tube — 5 stitches around for 4 rounds. Leaves are flat — ch 7 makes about 1.2" leaf. I sew them so they flop a little, not flat tight.

Step 3: Tiny ghost charm with chain

This ghost is the same as my clips collection — 6→24 wavy bottom. Chain is just ch 21, sl st back — 3" long chain so ghost bounces on shoulder like in your photo. I sew chain to side of cover, not bottom, so it hangs down side like you have it.

Step 4: Assembly — how they stay on

• Slip pumpkin covers over ear cups — lip from R7-R10 hugs cup. No glue.
• Stem + leaves sewn on top center.
• Ghost chain sewn to side of one cover at base of stem — I do left side, like your photo.
• If covers slide when you take headphones off, add 2 small stitches through cover into headphone padding with matching orange — removable later.

How I wear mine

I wear them when I walk in October, at my desk, and at market. They get lots of "where did you buy those?" People love the ghost bouncing. I don't wear them in rain — chunky yarn gets heavy if wet.

If they slip or look lopsided

Cover too loose: You did 42 not 36 — or 5 straight rounds not 4. Frog one round and try again.

Circle not flat, bowl shape: You missed increases — count R1-R6: 6,12,18,24,30,36.

Ghost chain twists: Use sl st chain not just chain — sl st makes it sturdy and not curly. Or use white cotton string.

Stem flops: Stuff lightly with tiny polyfill scrap or leave empty and tack with one stitch to keep upright.

Make them yours

I made black cat version — black covers with yellow eyes, and white ghost version — white covers with orange pumpkin charms. You can also make just pumpkins without ghost for simpler look. For Christmas, make red covers with green holly leaves.
