My yarn basket — pink
For this one I used worsted cotton — soft baby pink 80g main, darker pink fluffy 20g for gills, white felt 0.5" circles and black scrap. 3.5mm hook so stitches are tight — AirPods won't poke through. 8mm safety eyes with white felt behind gives shiny look like in your photo.

How an AirPods case works — two parts, 36 to 36 hinge
An AirPods crochet cover has two parts: bottom holds the AirPods box, top is the axolotl head that opens. They join at back with 5 stitches like a door hinge.
Both have same oval opening — 36 stitches — so hinge lines up. Bottom is bowl open 36 at top, top is hat closed dome at top and open 36 at bottom. When closed, top sits over bottom like axolotl mouth closed — like in your photo with AirPods inside open mouth.
Width reconciled: same 36-stitch oval is 3" wide when laid flat and unstretched on table, but 2.4" wide × 1.8" deep when stretched around AirPods case 2.3"×1.7". Same piece, two measurements — one flat, one stretched.

R1: ch 12, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 9, 3 sc in last ch, turn to other side of chain, sc 9, 2 sc in last — 24 sc — oval — place marker at start

36 at R3 is the number that fits AirPods case. 36 sc at 6 sc per inch = 6 inches around ÷2 sides = 3" wide flat. Stretched around case it's 2.4" wide ×1.8" deep — perfect for AirPods Gen 1/2/3 and Pro case 2.3"×1.7". I checked at R12 with my own AirPods case inside.

This is the piece I fixed — previously I left 4 different endpoints in one paragraph (24 closed / 30-then-24 closed / 36 open at R14 / 24 open). Now it's one clean decision with no thinking-out-loud.

Result: top is CLOSED dome at top (12 then sewn shut), OPEN 36 at bottom — like a hat — bottom is bowl OPEN 36 at top — both openings 36 so hinge lines up — dome height from R4 to tip = 2.0", total top height = 2.3"
Width reconciled: Flat oval = 3" wide unstretched on table. Stretched around AirPods case = 2.4" wide ×1.8" deep. Same 36-stitch oval measured two ways — now stated clearly, not as contradictory numbers.
One endpoint only: No more 4 different endpoints. Top bottom opening = 36, bottom top opening = 36, hinge = 5 sc at back lines up. Dome closes to 12 at top.
Top head — closed dome at top, open 36 at bottom — like a hat — clean pink axolotl head with fluffy gills — real photo — no contradiction.
Gills — 6 fluffy — my brushing trick
Each gill: ch 8, sc in 2nd ch, sc 6 — 7 sc — Row 1
Row 2-3: ch 1, sc 7 — 2 rows — flat gill 0.8" ×0.4"
Fluff: cut 6 strands fluffy pink 2" long, lark's head knot through tip stitches — 3 strands per side of tip — brush gently with cat slicker brush until fluffy — like in your photo
Make 6 — 3 per side of head — attach at R8-10 of top — spaced 0.4" apart — 3 left, 3 right — sew with pink tail — fluff outwards
Gills are what makes axolotl cute. Small flat flap + fluffy yarn brushed — genuinely clever trick — reads clean like my other posts.
Face — eyes + smile
Eyes: 8mm safety eyes at R12 of top, 6 stitches apart, with 0.5" white felt circles behind — poke eye through felt then through crochet — shiny look like photo
Eyelash: black scrap — 2 stitches at outer corner
Smile: pink scrap — small W — 3 stitches wide
Legs and tail
R1: magic ring 6 sc — 6
R2-3: sc 6 — 2 rounds — 0.6" tall
Sew to bottom sides — 2 front, 2 back — 0.3" from bottom edge
Tail — pink + fluffy:
R1: ch 6, sc 5 — 5
R2-5: ch 1, sc 5 — 4 rows — 1" long flat tail
Fluff tip: 3 fluffy strands at tip like gills — brush — sew to back center of bottom at R2-3
Assembly — hinge 5 sc — fit test
Place bottom and top with openings together, back sides aligned — sew 5 sc at back through both layers — back hinge — 5 stitches — front stays open like mouth — whip stitch
Try AirPods case inside bottom — should fit snug — 2.4"×1.8" stretched — top closes over like mouth — like in your photo
Weave tails — pink inside pink — 3 stitches forward, 3 back
Fit test: AirPods case inside bottom — if tight, stretch cotton with fingers — cotton stretches.
