Before you begin
I've been seeing mini cat keychains everywhere for fall 2026 markets — tiny black cats with purple bows that hang from wooden beads. I saw that pin with five black cats held by two hands over a cream cable knit with orange pumpkins, maple leaves and pine cones, and I knew I had to make my own batch for market.
What I love is it's low sew and so satisfying. The body is one piece top-down, head and belly together. Ears are tiny pointy pieces that sew on with one stitch. The purple bow with yellow center is what everyone saves from the pin — so cute against black.
If you can do magic ring and single crochet, you can make this. I keep tension tight with black yarn — black shows gaps — so I use 3.0mm hook. I count out loud and use stitch markers for eye placement.
Materials I used
- Black yarn: Worsted cotton — Lily Sugar'n Cream black, about 18 yards per cat. Crisp black you see in pin.
- Purple: Lavender purple — 8 yards per cat for bow — soft purple like in pin.
- Mustard yellow: Tiny scrap — 3 yards for bow center + eye rims.
- Pink: Tiny scrap for blush.
- 3.0mm hook: Tight for black.
- Eyes: 6mm safety eyes with yellow felt backing — or 8mm yellow rim eyes like pin. I embroider yellow ring around black eyes.
- Keychain hardware: Gold key rings + lobster clasps, 14mm & 12mm wooden beads natural mix — 4 beads per keychain like pin + big garland beads for display.
- Stuffing: Tiny polyfill.
- Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch marker.
- Props: Cream cable knit blanket, mini orange & white pumpkins, maple leaves, pine cones, dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks — exactly like cozy fall flat lay in your pin.
Sizing & what you'll need
Cat: 2.8" tall, 1.6" wide body. With 3mm hook and worsted, cat is palm mini size perfect for keys. If you use DK, cat will be 2.2" — extra mini for zipper pulls.
Black cotton holds pointy ears crisp — acrylic black pills.
Abbreviations
MR = magic ring, sc = single crochet, inc = increase, dec = invisible decrease, sl st = slip stitch, FO = fasten off. Work in continuous rounds.

Step 1: Mini cat body - one piece
All black, head and body together. Small loaf cat shape.

Step 2: Pointy ears
R1: MR, 4 sc (4)
R2: [sc, inc] x2 (6)

Flatten, sc through both layers (4), FO leave tail.
Sew to top at R2-3, 6 sts apart, pointy up like in pin. Right ear slightly forward for bow.
Step 3: Yellow eyes & kawaii face
- Insert 6mm safety eyes between R6-7, 6 sts apart — wide eyed cute
- Yellow rim: With mustard, embroider around each eye — surface sl st in a circle around eye — creates golden halo like your pin's yellow eyes
- White highlight optional: tiny white dot at top of eye for shine
- Pink blush: With pink yarn, 1 small horizontal stitch under each eye — soft pink cheeks like in pin
- Nose/mouth: Optional tiny pink V at center or just leave simple like pin — I do tiny black dot for nose
- Whiskers: With black thread or leave out for mini — pin shows no whiskers on mini, just clean face
Step 4: Purple bow with yellow center
Bow loops (make 2 tiny): Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch, hdc, sc, sl st — tiny petal. FO. Make 2.
Center - Mustard: MR, 4 sc (4), FO.
Assembly: Sew 2 lavender petals side by side on right ear (like pin — purple bow on right ear), with yellow center between — overlap slightly. Bow sits on ear, tilted like in your pin with yellow dot center.
Sew firmly to right ear, not head center — exactly like your 5 cats in pin.
Step 5: Wooden beads keychain & fall styling
Arms - Make 2 - Black: MR 4 sc, sc around 2 rounds, FO, sew to sides at R10-11, tiny nubs — like in pin small arms.
Legs - Make 2 - Black: MR 5 sc, sc around 2 rounds, FO, sew to bottom at R13-14, tiny feet — so cat sits.
Beaded Keychain:
- Thread gold key ring through top of head (R1), add lobster clasp.
- String pattern per cat like pin: 12mm, 14mm, 12mm, 12mm beads then gold ring + cat dangling
- For garland display like main pin: String 5 cats on one long wooden bead garland — big 20mm beads between each cat top, held by two hands for photo — exactly like your pin with 5 black cats hanging

How I finish mine
I weave all black tails inside with needle, then roll cat gently to even out tiny stuffing. I keep bottom flat so cat sits if needed, but for keychain it dangles — that's cute like your pin.
For bows, I sew with purple tail and make sure yellow center is centered — that's the detail people notice in photos. I brush black yarn lightly with toothbrush to fluff and hide seams.
My kitchen table moment: I made five cats Sunday with pumpkin chai and leaves outside window. 2.5 hours for all five — 30 min each. First cat took 35 min, fifth took 20 min. Put on cozy fall playlist, so fun to make a little cat family with purple bows.
