Before you begin — how this Halloween set is built

I wanted a Halloween set that feels cozy not scary — black and orange chunky gloves you can wear all fall, plus a little ghost that makes your coffee more fun. Both are rectangles, which is why beginners love this pattern.

For the gloves: chain edge is height. My chain is 22 chains = 7 inches tall from wrist to below knuckles. Rows build width around hand. My rectangle is 24 rows = 8 inches wide flat. When seamed into a tube, 8 inches becomes about 8 inches around relaxed, stretching to 9.5 inches. That fits S/M hands. The thumb hole is 4 rows skipped in the seam — and this is where I fixed the math from the earlier version: 8 rows seamed at wrist + 4 rows open for thumb + 12 rows seamed at top = 24 rows total. No gaps, no missing rows. 8+4+12=24, fully accounted for.

For the ghost mug cozy: it's a smaller rectangle — chain 24 = about 3.5 inches tall (fits standard mug), rows 22 = about 8.5 inches wide flat to wrap around 11-ounce mug with overlap. The ghost bottom edge is made with a wavy scallop after seaming, and the two little ghosts on top are tiny crochet triangles sewn on. Face is embroidered with black yarn — two dots and a smile.

Tip from my table: Make both gloves first, then use leftover white for ghost cozy — one skein each of black, orange, white is more than enough for full set. Count rows after each color block — 4 rows per stripe for gloves in black and orange alternating.

Materials I used

Super chunky yarn for gloves: Black about 50 yards, pumpkin orange about 50 yards — 100 yards total for pair. Wool-Ease Thick & Quick or similar.
Chunky or super chunky white for ghost cozy: About 40 yards white. I used same Thick & Quick white. Plus scrap black for eyes and smile — 1 yard.
Hooks: 8mm for gloves, 6mm for ghost cozy (tighter so coffee heat stays). Tapestry needle large eye.
Extras: Scissors, stitch marker, measuring tape, white mug (11 oz standard — 3.25 inches tall). Optional two small stitch markers to hold ghost top pieces.

Sizing — gloves and mug cozy

Gloves S/M: 7 inches tall (wrist to below knuckles), 8 inches around relaxed, 9.5 stretched. Fits hand circumference 7-8 inches. Chain 22 = 7 tall, 24 rows = 8 wide flat. When seamed into tube, flat width becomes circumference.

Gloves larger M/L: Chain 24 = 8 tall, 26 rows = 8.75 wide flat. Seam as 8+4+14=26. Smaller S: Chain 20 = 6.5 tall, 22 rows = 7.25 wide flat, seam 8+4+10=22.

Ghost mug cozy: Chain 24 = 3.5 tall, 22 rows = 8.5 wide flat, seamed into tube that fits 11 oz mug (about 10 inches around mug). For larger 15 oz mug, chain 28 = 4 tall, 26 rows = 10 wide flat. Ghost bottom wave adds about 0.5 inch extra length with points.

Gauge check: Gloves with 8mm: 7 hdc = 4 inches wide, 6 rows = 4 tall. Ghost cozy with 6mm: 8 sc = 4 inches wide, 8 rows = 4 tall. Check after 10 rows.

Part 1: Fingerless gloves — step-by-step with photos

1 Foundation chain — height of glove

With black super chunky and 8mm hook, chain 22 loose — about 7 inches. This chain is height from wrist to below knuckles. Don't twist.

2 Body — rectangle 24 rows

Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook and across — 21 hdc. Ch1 turn.
Rows 2-24: hdc 21 sts — 4 rows black, 4 orange repeat. 24 rows = 8 inches wide flat. End with black if you want both edges black like in pin.

Two gloves rectangles? Actually here two finished gloves flat — black and orange stripes, thumb holes visible, measuring tape yellow — real photo on cream linen. 24 rows = 8 inches wide.

3 Seam with thumb hole — 8+4+12=24

Fold rectangle so first row meets last row — tube shape. With tapestry needle and matching yarn: seam bottom 8 rows (2.5 inches) wrist, skip 4 rows (1.5 inches) thumb hole open, seam top 12 rows (3.5 inches) to finger edge. 8+4+12=24 — no missing rows. Turn right side out.

4 Second glove

Make second same — use same stripe order for pair or opposite for playful mismatch like pin (one black, one orange solid but same shape). In pin, one glove is solid black chunky, one solid orange with thumb hole — both same rectangle, just color choice. Weave ends.

Part 2: Ghost mug cozy — step-by-step

5 Ghost body rectangle

With white and 6mm hook, chain 24 (3.5 tall). Row 1 sc in 2nd ch and across — 23 sc. Rows 2-22 sc 23 sts — 8.5 inches wide flat. This width wraps around standard 11 oz mug with slight overlap. Seam side with whip stitch to make tube.

6 Wavy ghost bottom + two little ghosts

Wavy bottom: Along bottom edge of tube, work scallop: *sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st* repeat around — creates wavy ghost hem like in pin. Two little ghosts on top: Chain 6, row 1 sc 5, row 2 dec 1 at each side to triangle shape for 3 rows — makes small ghost 1.5 inch tall. Make 2. Sew to top back edge of cozy, about 1 inch apart, so they peek over mug like in pin. Embroider tiny black eyes and mouth with black yarn — two dots eyes, small smile.

How I finish mine for Halloween styling

After weaving ends, steam ghost cozy lightly — not touching — to relax. For photos like your pin: cream linen background, orange and white mini pumpkins, pinecones, cinnamon sticks tied with twine, dried orange slices, eucalyptus sprigs, fairy lights string, little black star confetti. Place black glove, orange glove with thumb hole visible, ghost mug cozy on white mug with handle to right, two little ghosts peeking. Take photo in morning light from window left. For detail insets at bottom of pin: close-up of ghost face, thumb hole circle, chunky black texture — exactly like your pin shows ghost detail, thumb hole, chunky texture.

Ways to make it your own

Colors: Solid black gloves with white ghost cozy is classic Halloween like pin, or orange + black stripes for both gloves, or cream gloves with orange ghost cozy for non-spooky fall.
Mug sizes: For 15 oz mug, chain 28 and 26 rows. For travel mug tall, chain 36 and add third ghost.
Ghost faces: Different expressions — sleepy eyes, heart eyes, or no face for minimal. Two ghosts or three ghosts peeking.
Matching set: Add Halloween beanie in black and orange from previous tuto to make full bundle — beanie + gloves + ghost mug = gift set that sold fast.
No ghost: Just wavy bottom mug cozy without top ghosts — still cute ghost shape with face.

Troubleshooting

Thumb hole too tight? Skip 5 rows not 4 — 8+5+11=24 for gloves. Or 8+5+12=25 if you add one extra row.
Gloves different sizes? Count rows — one 24, other 22. Each stripe block 4 rows.
Mug cozy too tight on mug? Need more rows — 24 rows wide = 9.25 flat for larger mug. Too loose — 20 rows = 7.75 flat.
Ghost bottom not wavy? Make sure scallop is sc-hdc-dc-hdc-sc, not all sc. Block with steam to shape points.
Little ghosts flopping? Stuff with tiny scrap yarn inside triangle, sew with extra stitch at base.
Math check gloves: 8 bottom + 4 thumb hole + 12 top = 24 rows — fully seamed, no gap. If you have gap, you seamed 6 not 12 at top — fix from earlier version.

Caring for your set

Hand wash cool water gentle, squeeze not wring, lay flat dry. Ghost cozy remove from mug before wash. Reshape ghost points while damp. Store folded. Keeps for many Halloweens, matches your beanie and leg warmers.
