Why I love tiny clips for Halloween

Big amigurumi is cozy but tiny clips are instant joy. You finish one while your kettle boils. Kids can wear two or three at once — ghost and bat together is my favorite combo — and they don't fall off like headbands.

Last year I made the ghost first. It's just a dome that doesn't close — 6 to 18, then straight down. My niece put it on and said it looked like it was flying. That was it, I had to make the whole set. I kept the math really small so beginners can do them without getting lost in counting.

I clip them onto a piece of cardboard shaped like a little tree at my market table. People always touch the candy corn one first.

What you need — my little Halloween basket

• Yarn: DK cotton — White 20g, Orange 15g, Black 20g, Purple 10g, Yellow 10g, plus tiny pink for cat nose
• Hook: 3.0mm — smaller hook keeps tiny pieces tight and no stuffing shows
• Clips: 1.5" alligator clips (silver or black), 8 pieces — I get them in 20-packs
• Extras: 6mm safety eyes or black embroidery thread, tiny bit polyfill for pumpkin/ghost/cat, tapestry needle, hot glue or needle to sew onto clip

My pumpkin — 6→18 ridged, stem on top. This is the one I make first to warm up.

The base clip I use

I use 1.5 inch alligator clips with teeth. I crochet a small rectangle base — ch 6, sc 5 rows — glue or sew it inside the clip's top, then sew the tiny amigurumi onto that base. It holds way better than gluing yarn directly to metal. Takes 2 minutes extra and they never fall off.

Clip 1: Ghost — 6→18, no sewing

My ghost is the fastest. The wavy edge at R8 is what gives it that floating look — don't skip it. I make 3 in a row assembly-line style.

Black cat — same base as ghost but with ears. Yellow eyes embroidered, pink nose.

Clip 2: Pumpkin — ridged ball with stem

This is the one in the photo you sent — the ridges make it look like a real tiny pumpkin. I pull the wrap yarn quite tight, then knot inside. Add a tiny green leaf — ch 4, sc, hdc, sc — if you want.

Clip 3: Black Cat — yellow eyes like yours

Black yarn is hard to see — I put a white towel on my lap and use a headlamp. Yellow eyes make it pop. This is the most popular one at markets after ghost.

Clip 4: Witch Hat — purple with brim

Same shape as my frog witch hat but mini. Brim is what makes it stay on clip — I sew through brim only. Leave tip floppy.

My full set — 8 tiny clips on cardboard. I make 2 sets at a time, assembly line.

Clip 5: Bat — tiny wings

Clip 6: Skull — white with black eyes

Clip 7: Candy Corn — 3-color triangle

This one is flat, no stuffing — I love how the 3 colors stack. Make sure to carry yarn up the side neatly or cut and weave.

Clip 8: Spiderweb — web on black

The web is embroidery, not crochet — faster and looks cleaner at 1 inch. I use white sewing thread doubled so it's fine.

How I attach to clips so they stay

1. Crochet base rectangle: ch 6, sc 5 rows. 2. Hot glue or sew base inside top of alligator clip. 3. Sew each tiny piece onto base with matching yarn, 3-4 stitches. Don't glue amigurumi directly — it pops off. Base method never fails for me.

If they curl or flop

Ghost wavy bottom curls too much: You increased to 24 in R8 — that's meant to wave. If it rolls, steam lightly.

Black cat hard to see stitches: White towel on lap, bright light, count by feel — 6,12,18.

Pumpkin not round: Stuff before closing R7-R8, not after.

Clips slide out of hair: Use clips with teeth and add small silicone strip inside or tease hair slightly.

Make them yours
