Before you begin
I've been wanting a chunky ear warmer for my fall forest walks for a while — not a beanie, but that wide ribbed band with a big bow on top that looks so cozy in photos. I saw that pin with the hand holding the cream and orange striped bow ear warmer over fall leaves and a cream blanket, and I knew I had to make my own.
What I love is it's 30 minutes with super bulky yarn. The band is just single crochet in back loop only — that's what gives that cozy ribbing like in your middle small image. Then we pinch it in the middle and wrap to make the chunky bow — no sewing really, just one wrap like your top image "Chunky Bow".
If you can chain and single crochet, you can make this. I keep tension loose with chunky yarn — it makes it extra squishy and warm. I use a stitch marker for row counts because cream and orange stripes can be hard to count.
Materials I used
- Cream yarn: Super Bulky (size 6) — I used Bernat Blanket or Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick in cream, about 40 yards. The soft white you see in your pin.
- Pumpkin orange: Same super bulky — about 30 yards for stripes. Burnt orange, not bright.
- 8.0mm hook: Big hook for chunky yarn — keeps it squishy not stiff.
- Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch marker.
- Props for styling: Fall maple leaves, cream knit blanket, forest background — exactly like your pin with golden fall light.
Sizing & what you'll need
Adult one size: 20" circumference (fits 21-23" with stretch), 4.5" tall — covers ears perfectly. With 8mm hook and super bulky, gauge is 7 sts = 4". If you use bulky (size 5) not super bulky, go up to 9mm hook or add 2 sts.
Super bulky is best — makes it quick and that chunky bow pops like in your pin. Worsted will be thin and bow won't stand up.
Sizes: Child: ch 12, 36 rows. Adult: ch 15, 42 rows. Large adult: ch 17, 46 rows. My pattern below is adult.
Abbreviations
ch = chain, sc = single crochet, BLO = back loop only (this makes ribbing), sl st = slip stitch, FO = fasten off. We work in rows, then seam into loop, then make bow twist.
Full roadmap - 4 steps
1. Chunky band - 42 rows of BLO ribbing with stripes
2. Cozy ribbing - why BLO gives that texture
3. Chunky bow twist - pinch + wrap + sew
4. Fall style - forest photos & gifting
Step 1: Crochet the chunky band
We crochet a flat rectangle sideways — chains are height of ear warmer, rows are circumference. Stripes every 2 rows like your pin.
Ch 15 (makes 4.5" tall band)
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch and across (14), ch1 turn
Row 2: BLO sc across (14), ch1 turn — first rib appears!
Row 3-4: Continue BLO sc, switch to pumpkin orange at end of Row 4
Row 5-6: With orange, BLO sc across (14), ch1 turn
Row 7-8: With cream, BLO sc across
Continue stripe pattern: [2 rows cream, 2 rows orange] until Row 42 total — should measure 20" long flat, fits around head with slight stretch.
FO, leave long tail 20" for seaming.
Seam into loop:
Fold band short ends together, whip stitch with tail through BLO loops — makes tube. FO, weave tail. Tube should be 20" around.
Step 2: Cozy ribbing texture
The ribbing in your pin's middle close-up is just BLO single crochet with super bulky yarn. Each row creates a ridge. Cream and orange stripes make it look like pumpkin spice.
My tension: I keep sc loose — don't pull tight. Chunky yarn needs air to stay soft. I count rows by ridges — 21 ridges = 42 rows.
Step 3: Chunky bow twist
This is the "Chunky Bow" from your pin — looks like a bow but it's actually just gathered fabric wrapped. So easy!
1. Lay loop seam at back center.
2. Find front center opposite seam.
3. Pinch front center fabric together — accordion fold, 3 folds — like gathering curtain.
4. Wrap: Cut 12" piece of cream yarn, wrap tightly around pinched section 4 times — creates bow center like your top image.
5. Tie tight at back, knot twice, weave tails inside bow center to hide.
6. Fluff bow — pull top and bottom edges out to make bow wings wide and chunky like in hand photo — 4" wide bow.
I wrap with cream so center is cream like pin — orange stripes show on bow wings. My bow is 4" wide, 3" tall — big and statement, exactly like your hand-held photo.
Step 4: Fall style & gifting
Styling (copy your pin collage):
- Hand holding: Hold bow front with hand from below, nails natural, over cream knit blanket with fall maple leaves scattered — like your main image
- Close-up Chunky Bow: Macro of bow center wrap, show cream + orange stripes twisting — like bottom left small image
- Cozy Ribbing: Flat lay of band texture, BLO ridges, cream yarn — like middle small image
- Fall Style: Wear in forest, brown hair down, beige sweater, smiling with leaves falling around — like bottom right small image in your pin
- Golden hour light, warm filter — that's the fall cozy vibe for 2026 markets
Gifting: Makes perfect 30-min market make — I sell at $25. Add tag "Handmade with love" and wrap in kraft paper with dried orange leaf.
How I finish mine
I weave all tails inside the band with tapestry needle, then I steam lightly with iron 2 inches away — not touching — makes super bulky bloom and get even squishier. I don't wash, just steam.
For photos, I shoot at 4pm in backyard with maple leaves I collected that morning. Cream blanket underneath makes orange stripes pop — that's the cozy fall look everyone saves.
My kitchen table moment: I made this ear warmer Saturday with pumpkin spice latte and leaves blowing outside. 30 min total — 20 min band, 5 min seam, 5 min bow twist. Put on fall playlist, so cozy and fast.
Thanks for making with me
This chunky bow ear warmer is exactly the viral fall accessory trend for 2026 — cozy ribbing, big bow, quick to make and perfect for forest walks, pumpkin patches and fall markets. I hope you love wearing it when leaves fall.
If you make one, I'd love to see it in the forest — tag me, I keep all your fall photos in a little folder on my phone.
Happy crocheting!
Ways to make it your own
- Solid color: All cream or all orange for minimal fall look — my favorite is all cream.
- Different stripes: Try 1 row cream, 1 row orange for thinner stripes, or 3 rows each for chunky.
- Smaller bow: Pinch less fabric for smaller bow — 3" wide instead of 4" for subtle.
- Kid size: Ch 12, 36 rows for child 18" head — perfect for mommy & me sets.
- Extra cozy: Use wool blend super bulky for extra warm — great for ski trips.
