Cozy Halloween Beanie + Gloves — The One With The Little Ghost And Pumpkin Tassels

Why this set is my go-to in October

I have a lot of Halloween patterns, but this is the one I actually wear. The beanie is black so it goes with everything, and the two little charms bouncing when you walk make people smile in the grocery line. Last year the cashier asked me where I bought it and I said "I made it last night while watching Hocus Pocus" — which is true.

The gloves are fingerless because I need my fingers for my phone and for holding my mug, like in the photo. They're striped orange and black but I made the stripes thin — 2 rows each — so it doesn't look like a bee, more like cozy Halloween.

Everything is double crochet for the big pieces, single crochet for charms. No fancy stitches.

What you need

• Yarn: Bulky / chunky — Black 120g for beanie, Orange 60g + Black 40g for gloves, White 10g ghost, Orange 10g pumpkin + green scrap for stem
• Hook: 6.0mm for beanie and gloves, 3.5mm for charms
• Extras: Tapestry needle, scissors, stitch marker, 2 small black beads or embroidery for ghost eyes

Beanie body — black double crochet, starts with ribbed band, then straight up. This is after about 20 minutes.

Sizing — how I size mine

My beanie: Adult average — 20" circumference, fits 21-22" head, slouchy. Band is ribbed so it stretches. Gloves: One size — 7.5" around hand, 7" long. If you have small hands, go down to 5.5mm hook. If large, add 4 stitches to starting chain.

Abbreviations — quick

ch — chain, sc — single crochet, dc — double crochet, inc — 2 in same, dec — 2 together, sl st — slip stitch, BLO — back loop only, FLO — front loop only, FO — fasten off. I work beanie bottom-up, in joined rounds.

Step 1: Black beanie — rib + body

The ribbed band is what makes it look store-bought. I do back loop only single crochet for 60 rows — it stretches nicely. If you hate ribbing, you can do dc band but it won't be as cozy.

Step 2: Spiral tassel cords

3 sc in each chain is the trick — it forces the curl. Don't block it, the curlier the better. White for ghost, orange for pumpkin — matches charms.

Step 3: Tiny ghost charm

Same ghost as my hair clips collection, just a touch bigger. Wavy bottom at R7 makes it float. I sew it to end of white spiral.

My tiny charms — ghosts with wavy bottoms and pumpkins with green stems. 10 minutes each.

Step 4: Tiny pumpkin charm

Pumpkin charms are my favorite to make — the wrap ridges make them look real. Sew to end of orange spiral.

Step 5: Striped fingerless gloves — orange and black

Stripes are 2 rows each — orange, black, orange, black. The thumb hole is just a chain skip — I tried complicated thumbs and they were annoying. This simple hole is comfy and you can still hold a mug like in the photo. If you want tighter, do sc last round.

Gloves — 2-row stripes, orange and black. Quick fingerless with thumb hole, no shaping needed.

Step 6: Assembly — attach charms

Sew ghost to end of white spiral cord, pumpkin to orange spiral. I use white yarn for ghost, orange for pumpkin, double knot inside charm. Give spiral a little tug so it bounces. Gloves need no assembly — just weave tails.

How I finish mine

I weave tails inside beanie band so they don't itch. I steam gloves lightly so stripes even out. Charms I leave unblocked so ghost waves. If beanie is too slouchy, do one less round in body (R2-R11 instead of R2-R12).

If something looks off

Beanie too tight: Band rows — you need 60 rows BLO sc 9. If you did 50, it will be tight. Add 5 rows.

Spirals not curly: You did 1 sc per ch — need 3 sc per ch to force curl.

Ghost curls up: R7 increase to 24 gives wave — if you skipped, add it.

Gloves too short: Add 2 more stripe repeats — orange 2, black 2.

Make it yours

I made one in cream beanie with black cat and ghost charms, and one in orange beanie with just ghosts. You can also add a pom pom on top plus tassels — I don't, because I like slouchy, but it's cute. If you make it, tag me — I love seeing your cozy sets.
