My yarn basket — 100% wool primary colors
For this blanket I used 100% wool because it blocks beautifully and the colors stay crisp — cream as the calm base, black for structure, and red, yellow, blue for the Bauhaus pops. You need Cream 700g (14 skeins 50g), Black 350g (7 skeins), Red 250g (5 skeins), Blue 200g (4 skeins), Yellow 200g (4 skeins) — total 1700g. 5.5mm hook, tapestry needle, scissors, blocking mat.

R1 — Blue center: Magic ring, ch3 (=dc), 11 dc in ring — 12 dc — sl st to top ch3 — blue — 1.5in
R2 — Yellow: Switch to Yellow, ch3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around — 24 dc — sl st — 2.8in
R3 — Black + Red + Yellow mix: This is the Bauhaus round — *this is where you can play* — I do: Switch to Black, ch3, (2dc, ch2, 3dc) in same space corner, [3dc in next gap, (3dc, ch2, 3dc) corner] 3 times, 3dc last gap — 8 clusters =24 dc +4 ch2 corners — use Black for corners, Red and Yellow for side clusters alternating — 4in
R4 — Black + Cream: Switch to Cream for corners, Black for sides — 12 clusters =36 dc +4 corners — 4.8in
R5 — Red border: Switch to Red — 16 clusters =48 dc +4 corners — 5.5in
R6 — Cream final: Switch to Cream — 20 clusters =60 dc +4 corners — 6in — fasten off
SIMPLIFIED FOR BEGINNERS — if color changes feel hard:
R1 Blue 12 dc
R2 Yellow 24 dc
R3 Black 36 dc (12 clusters)
R4 Red 48 dc (16 clusters)
R5 Black 60 dc (20 clusters) — mix in yellow/blue scraps if you want pops
R6 Cream 60 dc + corners to 6in — always cream last round so all squares have same cream border for easy joining — 60 dc +4 ch2
Beginner color changes — how I do it
Change color on the last yarn-over of the last stitch of the old color — pull new color through. Cut old color leaving 4in tail, keep crocheting. Weave tails later with needle — I do it while watching something cozy.
Layout — 6 wide ×8 tall
Lay all 48 squares on your floor. I like to put all the squares with lots of blue in different rows so the blue dots travel across the blanket. No two same squares next to each other if you can help it. Take a photo so you remember your layout before you start joining.
Joining — whip stitch with cream
1. Join row by row — first make 8 rows of 6 squares each — whip stitch 6 squares together per row — 5 seams per row ×8 rows =40 seams
2. Then join the 8 rows together — 7 seams ×6 squares tall =7 long seams
Total seams: 40 +7 =47 seams — each seam 6in long — whip stitch with cream — 6in =12 sts per side
Border — simple cream frame
After all squares joined, 36in ×48in:
R1: With Cream, sc around entire blanket — 3 sc in each corner ch2, 12 sc per square side — Width: 6 squares ×12 =72 sc per long edge ×2 =144, Height: 8 squares ×12 =96 sc per short edge ×2 =192, plus 4 corners ×3 =12 — Total R1 =144+192+12 =348 sc
R2-4: sc around 348 sc — 3 more rounds — 2in thick cream border
R5: reverse sc (crab stitch) 348 — final bumpy edge
Finished: 36in +4in border =40in wide ×48in +4in =52in tall — 40×52in throw

Final product
Here it is folded — red, yellow, blue, black, cream — geometric, warm, heavy. This is the blanket that lives on my couch all winter.
